Sarah McDade has been commissioned by Pendle Tourism to make a set of ten plaques to represent the ten people of Pendle who died at the hands of witch hunters four hundred years ago this year. They will be sited on tree stumps in Aitken wood at Barley, below Pendle Hill.

This will form part of a new sculpture trail, and along with other artists Sarah has also been asked to produce a tall sculpture for the woodland walk

Helen Sergeant and Louise Crosby took part in the Yorkshire Art Loop Project last year. Ian McMillan provided a specially commissioned poem that was used as a catalyst for a chain of artworks to be produced by over 33 artists from across the area in a ‘chinese whispers’ type art event. This was a collaborative art project organized by involving the West Yorkshire Visual Arts Network which brings together artists working across West Yorkshire including those from West Yorkshire Print Workshop: Mirfield and Upper Calderdale Artist Network.

Artists worked in three chains with only the first artist in each chain seeing the poem. They produced a piece of artwork inspired by the poem which they sent to the next artist who in turn responded. Artist were then invited to produce a piece of artwork in direct response to the poem.

Helen was part of one chain and produced work based on pregnancy food cravings.

Louise in her former role as Gallery Manager at WYPW was one of the organisers of the project so worked directly from the poem illustrating it in ‘comic form’.

The work was shown at The Pop-Up Space, Bradford and at WYPW. There will be a last chance to see the work at the Arthouse, as part of the Wakefield Art Walk – date to follow. Also further details artwalk.org.uk

Sarah is running two ceramic sculpture/hand-building workshops in the spring: Sunday 11th March, and Saturday 14th April.

You will be able to make a pot or sculpture of your own design, with help at every stage.

Venue: Linden Art Studio, Linden Mill, Hebden Bridge. Time: 11a.m. to 4p.m.

Starting in 2010, Sarah worked with four year 10 students doing clay work at four other schools in the Thornhill area of Dewsbury. They worked with children to make sculptures for their own schools and now Sarah with a little help from a few students has produced a large scale ceramic sculpture for the college

The sculpture is comprised of coiled shapes stacked onto steel poles and the designs are inspired by the work done in local schools.

In October Helen will be offering the opportunity to participate in two drawing and painting workshops exploring the pregnant body and the mother and child.

Both workshops are suitable for the beginner and experienced alike.

Helen Sargeant has extensive experience of delivering high quality arts workshops in artists studios, galleries, community centres, hospitals, and schools. In addition to this Helen Sargeant has taught life drawing in both further and higher education and is an academic who has taught and lectured Visual Arts at The University of Salford.

The day will include a two hour life drawing session working from a Pregnant life model, a short seminar about the history of the Pregnant body in contemporary and historic arts and culture, and time to develop a painting  from studies made during the workshop together with the participants “life experiences” of pregnancy.

As part of Hebden Bridge Open Studios 2011, Sarah McDade, Sheila Tilmouth, Louise Crosby, Joan Francis and Helen Sargeant will be opening the Linden Art Studio to the public on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd July.  Come along, meet the artists, see their work, share ideas, find out more about upcoming workshops, and of course, the chance to buy art work directly from the studio.

The surface of a domestic window pane provides the vehicle by which Joan produces her beautiful and ephemeral landscapes. The images have a painterly, poetic quality that suggest’ s the fragility of life. Condensation drips down the interior of the window pane. The grey northern light of dawn or that of the late evening filters in. The view from the window is veiled by both condensation and a light frost forming on the surface of the glass. These sensitive photographs remind the viewer of moments of waking and of loosing conciousness, at the beginning or end of the day.

This body of work can be seen at the Hebden Bridge Open Studios in July.

Sheila Tilmouth also shares a website with Hannah Lawson. The two artists share a love of bird’s, wild life and conservation, this beautiful site demonstrates their passion and artistic vision.
